California's rules, in plain English

Fridges, freezers, AC units and dehumidifiers hold refrigerant. In California, refrigerant and other parts that need special handling have to be removed by a certified technician or a certified appliance recycler before the appliance is crushed or scrapped. That's why an old fridge can't just go in a dumpster.

Electronics have rules too. California treats TVs, monitors, computers and many other devices as e-waste, and you can't throw them out with your household trash. They have to go to a place that accepts e-waste.

We handle appliances and electronics with these rules in mind, so you don't have to figure out where each item is supposed to go. Pulling out old appliances as part of a remodel? See construction debris removal.

Getting appliances ready for pickup

A little prep makes the job faster and safer.

  • Have gas, water and electrical lines shut off and disconnected before we arrive. A plumber or installer should handle gas connections.
  • Empty the fridge and freezer. If you can, unplug the freezer a day early so it can defrost and drain.
  • Drain the water heater once it has cooled. A full tank is very heavy and will leak.
  • Run the washer's drain cycle so it isn't full of water.
  • Clear a path from the appliance to the door, and note any tight turns or steps.

When you're replacing an appliance

If you bought a new appliance, the seller may offer to take the old one at delivery. That works when the old one is ready and in the right place on delivery day.

We're the option when the old fridge is already in the garage, the dryer is in a backyard, or you have several things to clear at once. If LA Sanitation serves your home, its free bulky item pickup is another choice for items you can get to the curb and that can wait for a scheduled day.

How pricing works and how to get a faster quote

Price depends on how many items there are, what they are, how heavy they are, and how hard they are to get out. A fridge from a ground floor kitchen is simpler than a washer and dryer from a second floor laundry closet. You get one fixed price in writing before we start, with no surprise fees.

Send these through the quote form or by text to (213) 838-4285:

  • A photo of each appliance where it sits now
  • A photo of the path out: hallway, stairs, back door
  • Whether it's already disconnected
  • The floor, and whether there's an elevator

What we can't take

We can't take hazardous waste such as paint, chemicals, motor oil, propane tanks (including the tank from a gas grill), or asbestos. LA Sanitation runs free S.A.F.E. centers where residents can drop off household hazardous waste.

FAQ

Questions we get

Do you take refrigerators and AC units that still have refrigerant?

Yes. Under California rules the refrigerant has to be recovered before the unit is scrapped, so we make sure it goes somewhere that does that.

Can I just put an old TV in my trash bin?

No. In California, TVs, monitors and computers are e-waste and can't go out with household trash. Add it to your pickup with us, or use a city e-waste option.

Do you disconnect appliances?

Please have gas, water and power disconnected and capped before we arrive. A plumber or installer should handle any gas line.

Do you take water heaters?

Yes, once they're drained and disconnected. Let the tank cool before draining it.
