Westside housing is a real mix

Few parts of LA change as fast from block to block. Bel Air, Brentwood and Pacific Palisades have large homes on hillside and canyon roads. Cheviot Hills, Rancho Park, Beverlywood, Mar Vista and Westchester are mostly single-family streets with driveways and garages.

Palms, Sawtelle and the blocks around UCLA in Westwood are packed with apartment buildings, many of them older walk-ups. Century City is high-rise condos and office towers. Playa Vista is newer apartment and condo buildings. In Venice, many homes are older bungalows on small lots, and some sit on walk streets where no car can pull up to the door.

Access, parking and building rules

Hillside streets in Bel Air, Brentwood and the Palisades are narrow and winding, with tight turns and little room to park. Some homes sit well above or below the street. We look at the street ahead of time and plan where to park and how far we carry. Many of these hillside streets also have posted red flag no-parking signs that apply on high fire danger days, so we check before the job.

Lots of Westside blocks have permit parking or short time limits. We read the signs and plan loading time around them. In Venice, we load from the alley whenever there is one, since walk streets and tight parking make the front of the house hard to reach.

In Century City and other towers, the building usually requires a loading dock slot and a reserved service elevator. You book that with management, and we schedule around it. Older apartment buildings in Westwood and Palms often have stairs and no elevator, which is fine. Just tell us the floor.
